Exhibitions
Embracing Our Differences
Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its 6th annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity. National and international submissions are encouraged. 45 artists will be selected for the exhibit. The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the month of April 2009 at Island Park along Sarasota s beautiful bayfront. The exhibit will also be displayed throughout the month of May 2009 in North Port, Florida. Since 2004, more than 550,000 visitors have viewed the exhibit. Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme Embracing Our Differences . The art-work will also be evaluated on how effectively it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size 16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high. Artists are encouraged to use bold saturated colors and strong lines. Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals. A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented. The mission of Embracing Our Differences is to use art as a catalyst for creating awareness and promoting the value of diversity, the benefits of inclusion and the significance of the active rejection of hatred and prejudice. A Pinch and a Dash
The Smithtown Township Arts Council is now accepting entries for A Pinch and a Dash, an exhibition celebrating Women's History Month March 28- April 19, 2009 at the Mills Pond House Gallery. The exhibition seeks to examine the American woman s changing role in the kitchen, from rural times when a woman s biscuits defined her reputation, to twentieth century ready-made preparation. A Pinch and a Dash calls for works that exemplify women s role in the kitchen or reveal how that role has changed to meet new challenges in American society, from providing sustenance for the family, to maintaining ethnic traditions, to natural and organic awareness. Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site
Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site seeks proposals for its 2010 tour season and beyond. There are two funding categories: Exhibition, approval providing a budget of up to $7,500 and approval to exhibit at the historic site; and Exhibition Development, providing up to $2,500 with no guarantee of exhibition. The Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cell blocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true penitentiary, a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America s most notorious criminals, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone. Tours today include the cell blocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone's Cell, and Death Row. A critically-acclaimed series of artists installations is free with admission. Photographers have been witness to a dizzying array of groundbreaking innovations in recent years. The Sketchbook Project
Art House sends you the sketchbook, you make the art. Exhibition Proposals - Gallery at Flashpoint
The Cultural Development Corporation (CuDC) is requesting proposals for the Gallery at Flashpoint's September 2009/August 2010 season. Hun Gallery International 2009
Hun Gallery International is an annual juried fine art competition and exhibition sponsored by Hun Gallery located in New York City. Through this competition, Hun Gallery is seeking and presenting new emerging artists internationally. Juried Photography Exhibit
The Tercera Gallery Annual Juried Photography Exhibit is opening its doors to all contemporary photographs that tell a story about how you see the world. VSA arts Announces a Call for Exhibition Proposals
VSA arts is seeking art exhibition proposals for production in 2009 and 2010. If selected, the proposal(s) will be initially considered for production and presentation at the Terrace Gallery of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., from May 28 to June 25, 2009. Proposals will also be reviewed for programming in advance of and during the 2010 International VSA arts Festival, also to be held in Washington, D.C. VSA arts encourages curators, researchers, and artists from the university and museum communities, including those with disabilities, to incorporate the work of artists with disabilities into their exhibitions. Individual or group proposals are acceptable. This call invites a progressive dialogue by nurturing the curatorial voice from the perspective of disability. VSA arts welcomes proposals that address, challenge, and expand the discussion about disability and culture. The City of Aurora Art in Public Places
The City of Aurora Art in Public Places Program is accepting exhibit proposals for the 2009 Exhibit Program schedule. Aurora's fine art exhibit galleries are free and open to the public, contribute to Aurora's cultural vibrancy while supporting local and regional artistic activity. Solo, two-person, or group exhibits of two-dimensional contemporary art in a variety of media and styles will be considered. Paint the Town
waterworks gallery of Friday Harbor, Washington is coordinating a competition for artists in celebration of Friday Harbor's 100th anniversary, Paint the Town. Artists are invited to paint their interpretations of the Town of Friday Harbor and enter their paintings in the juried show scheduled for summer 2009. 100 years of Friday Harbor History The Town of Friday Harbor has been the commercial, social, and cultural hub of San Juan Island since the 1890s. On February 9, 1909, Friday Harbor, encompassing 1.4 square miles, was officially incorporated as a Town. The Great Depression, World War II, the pea weevil, and competition from Eastern Washington growers brought about the decline of traditional Island industries. However, the 1960s brought tourism and the appreciation of Friday Harbor's picturesque qualities. Deadline: March 15, 2009. Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival
Artists from all countries are invited to send proposals for temporary site-specific sculpture installations that raise awareness about environmental issues related to land, water and culture. Works must be suitable for an urban nature park with an emphasis on wetlands conservation and environmental education. Artists selected for the 2009 Festival will create their artworks during a 15-day residency in Taiwan, May 31 June 15, 2009. The time to make the installation will be 12 days, and artists must have their works completed by the press conference opening on June 12, 2009. The selected artists will receive a fee of US$1200 (NT$40,000), economy airfare from their home country to Taiwan and return, accommodations from May 31 June 15, some meals and volunteer help to create their works. Selected artists will create their works at Guandu Nature Park using sustainable natural materials found on site such as reeds, rice straw, earth, small stones, branches, and small bamboo as well as recycled bamboo. The artworks should last for the full three months of the exhibition and be able to survive typhoons and heavy rains as well as hot and dry summer weather. After the exhibition, artworks should be recyclable and easy to dismantle without leaving a trace on the land. The artworks should offer opportunities for public interaction and volunteer participation with the artists. Public Do It Yourself activities with the artists will be part of the opening weekend activities on June 13 and 14. Downtown Denver Arts Festival
11th Annual Downtown Denver Arts Festival. The festival is the only major event in Colorado that showcases only artists from Colorado. Wyoming Art Show - Wyoming, OH

Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival
The Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival is ranked among the top 100 best art and craft shows in the country by the Art Fair Source Book. The Larry Harris List of the Nation’s Best Art Festivals ranks the Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival among the top 20 in the Pacific Northwest and California. Sales for the 2008 show, which included 130 artists, were approximately $500,000 based on taxes collected by the City of Ketchum. Admission is free and entertainment and educational programs are scheduled throughout the weekend. The area is a level, grassy field surrounded by high alpine mountains. Long's Park Art and Craft Festival
Every Labor Day weekend some 20,000 art lovers come to Long's Park to shop for fine arts and crafts. Ranked 4th in the country by The Harris List and a Top 10 show by Art Fair SourceBook, the show draws sophisticated, high income buyers from Philadelphia, Baltimore, across Central Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, New York and beyond. The City of Oakland Cultural Arts and Marketing Division is proud to announce the release of the Request for Qualifications for another Measure DD public art opportunity, the Oakland, CA: Watershed Public Art Markers. Bay Area artists are invited to apply for the opportunity to design an interpretive public art marker that celebrates and identifies the role of the watershed systems of Oakland, California, including creeks, lakes, and the estuary. The selected artist will create a prototype of the art marker and will fabricate and install the first series of markers based on this prototype at various key locations in the Oakland watershed systems. The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture is looking for Arizona artists and poets to feature as part of the yearly 7th Avenue Streetscape exhibition. This is open only to Arizona artists and poets who have not received a City of Phoenix public art commission. Two-dimensional artwork from up to three artists will be selected for display in the art panels at 7th Avenue and Glenrosa Street. Poems from up to three Arizona poets will also be selected for display as part of this popular outdoor gallery. The artwork and poems will be on display for approximately one year. Artists should submit images of original artwork for consideration. Selected works will be enlarged and displayed on three double-sided translucent Lexan panels at the 7th Avenue and Glenrosa site. The panels will display artwork on one side and poetry on the other. The panels are approximately 5'6"h x 7'10" w, and back lit for vivid nighttime display. This outdoor gallery has become a highly visible cornerstone of revitalization efforts along 7th Avenue, and a place for the community to gather and see the finest examples of works from Arizona artists. International call for artists - MAXXI 2per100, Rome
MAXXI2percento is an international call for artists for the realization of two works of art for MAXXI, the new national museum of 21st-Century Art, designed by Zaha Hadid for a lot in Via Guido Reni in Rome, which will be inaugurated in 2009. The competition is held by the Provveditorato interregionale per le opere pubbliche per il Lazio, l'Abruzzo e la Sardegna, along with PARC – Direzione generale per la qualita e la tutela del paesaggio, l'architettura e l'atre contemporanee. MAXXI, the first national museum dedicated to contemporary art, calls for the realisation of two works of art: one for the building's main entrance lobby; the other for the exterior grounds. The overall budget for the two works will be 1,130,000 euros. The indoor work will be installed in the main entrance lobby, a vast and prevalently vertical space, and should be suspended at least 3 meters from the floor. The budget for this work is 430,000 euros. The outdoor work will be freely placed in an area that includes both open spaces and areas covered by projecting architectural volumes, with a maximum height of 5.5 meters. The budget for this work is 700,000 euros. The competition is open to artists of every nation, with the option of participating individually or as a group. Avenue of the Arts 2009 - Kansas City, MO
The Avenue of the Arts Foundation invites artists to submit digital images, qualifications and proposals to be considered for the 2009 Avenue of the Arts installation. The deadline for submission of entries is Monday, January 12, 2009. Open to artists residing within 50 miles of Kansas City, Missouri. As part of the ongoing revitalization of the Avenue of the Arts (Central Street) in Downtown Kansas City, the Foundation will commission six artists to create temporary site-specific art installations for six intersections along the street. The installations will be on display from May through September 2009. Artists may be asked to work collaboratively with members of the Artist Selection Panel and project consultants in determining unique design opportunities. South Spokane Street Viaduct - Seattle, WA
The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) seeks an artist or artist team to develop permanent artwork in conjunction with the widening of the South Spokane Street Viaduct in Seattle's SoDo (South Downtown) neighborhood. The selected artist will develop a creative response to the expansive viaduct and its industrial setting. Possible locations for artwork include the underside of the viaduct's elevated roadway, its forest of support columns, the spaces surrounding new traffic ramps, the improved lower Spokane Street roadway and its new sidewalk and/or other areas adjacent to the viaduct. Safety issues prevent placing artwork on the elevated roadway. Construction, which began this year, will continue until 2011. The call is open to established professional artists living in the United States. The budget for design is $60,000 and includes travel costs. It is anticipated that $340,000 will be available for fabrication and installation, for a total project budget of $400,000. The application deadline is 11:00pm (PST), Tuesday, February 17, 2009. Mesa State College - New Classroom Building - Grand Junction, CO
The New Classroom Building is 80,000 sq. ft. and houses the Business School and Teacher Education programs. It includes classrooms, lecture halls, a conference room and faculty offices. The building has wide corridors, in a serpentine shape, which extend the learning environment after the classes are over. The Art Selection Committee has determined that there are several opportunities for art at the New Classroom Building. Artists that work in 2-dimensional art may apply for large scale works to be placed throughout the interior of the building. There are staircases and an atrium area that can accommodate kinetic sculpture. Opportunities are also available on certain areas of the exterior that can be a relief attached to the exterior wall of the building or a 3-dimensional piece placed close to the facility. Center for Urban Waters - Tacoma, WA
Artists and/or artist teams from the states of Washington, Oregon and California are invited to submit qualifications for a $150,000 commission for the Center for Urban Waters. The Center for Urban Waters will be a three-story, 51,205 square-foot marine research facility located on the east side of the Thea Foss Waterway in Tacoma. The building will house laboratories and office space for the City of Tacoma's Environmental Services Division, University of Washington Tacoma Urban Waters Research Program and a new state agency, Puget Sound Partnership. One of the project goals is to attain the highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, which is Platinum. The property is being developed by Lorig Associates, LLC. Call for Sculpture - Yakima, WA
The Yakima Arts Giving Circle (YAGC) exists for the purpose of promoting an expanded artistic presence in the City of Yakima, Washington by encouraging artists to create and place works of public art in the City of Yakima, with particular emphasis on the City's urban core. The YAGC seeks a work of art to be installed at the T-intersection of A Street and Front Street in the Historic District of Yakima, WA on a site set aside for this specific purpose. The art should be compatible with its environment but need not be "historic" in style or content. It is desirable that the work fits the general theme of light, a major component of the artistic and architectural revitalization of Yakima's urban core and a natural feature of the Yakima environment. Central Park Public Art Project - San Ramon, CA
The City of San Ramon is seeking a qualified artist(s) to submit their qualifications to provide an art element for San Ramon's Central Park Bollinger Canyon entrance. Artists of all media are encouraged to apply for consideration. The City is seeking an artist to design artwork for the site that will be visible to visitors entering the park from the Bollinger Canyon Side entrance. The final piece should be vandal resistant and portray the sense of fun and family that San Ramon is known for. The park is home to a community center, sports fields, children's playground, picnic areas, amphitheater, basketball courts, and a skateboard Park. It is home to many civic events including the annual Art & Wind Festival and Star Spangled Spectacular celebrations both of which attract over 70,000 people to the park. South Park Drainage Artwork and Residency

Jentel Artist Residency Program
Jentel Artist Residency Program offers four-week residencies eleven months of the year to visual artists in all media and writers in all genre on a cattle ranch in the Lower Piney Creek Valley, 20 miles southeast of Sheridan, Wyoming. Each residency includes a comfortable private room, access to a common living area and separate studio. A stipend helps defray food, travel, and shipping expenses. Individuals who are over 24 years old and who are not matriculated students, U.S. citizens and members of the international community already residing in the U.S. are eligible. For residencies from January 15 to May 13, 2009 the application deadline is September 15, 2008 and for May 15 to December 13, 2009, the deadline is January 15, 2009. Grants for Artist Projects in Washington State
Beginning with its 2009 grants cycle, Artist Trust's Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) application will only be available online. With more and more artists transitioning to digital work samples, the Internet being readily available to most artists, and the time-intensive procedure of processing paper applications, Artist Trust is putting both its Grants for Artist Projects and Fellowship applications online. Individual artists who reside in Washington State are encouraged to apply to the 2009 GAP (Grants for Artist Projects) Program. Artist Trust's GAP Program provides support for individual artist projects by awarding up to $1,500 for projects including (but not limited to) the development, completion or presentation of new work. Last year 975 artists applied to the GAP Program and 80 artists were funded from around the State. The GAP Program is open to artists working in all creative disciplines including visual, performing, literary, media, emerging and cross-disciplinary arts. Applicants must be residents of Washington State but cannot be a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program. A peer review panel of artists and art professionals from across Washington State selects GAP recipients. The panel's selections are based foremost on the artistic excellence of an artist's work as represented in their application. GAP guidelines are available on the Artist Trust website at www.artisttrust.org. Applications must be submitted online by 5:00pm on February 20, 2009. All time-based work samples (CDs and DVDs) must be mailed or hand-delivered to Artist Trust at 1835 12th Avenue and East Denny Way in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle by 5:00pm on February 20, 2009 with confirmation of your online application. KHN Center for the Arts - Residency Program
The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, Nebraska offers 2- to 8-week residencies year-round for writers, visual artists, and music composers. Housing, studio space, $100/week stipend are provided. Approximately 50 residencies are awarded per year. Two deadlines each year: postmarked March 1 for the following July through December 15; postmarked September 1 for the following January through June 15. Application fee: $25. Elsewhere Artists Collaborative
Elsewhere, an arts production site and experimental museum in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina, is seeking artists, curators, writers, musicians, and cultural producers for residencies during its spring, summer, and fall 2009 seasons. Set within a former thrift store housing a 58-year collection of American surplus, thrift, and antiques, Elsewhere invites experimental creators to utilize the immense collection of objects to pursue site-specific material, conceptual, and/or technologically-based projects. Elsewhere s building two storefronts on the ground floor, a 14-room boarding house on the second, and warehouse on the third provides dynamic architectures for the creation and installation of works. Artists live and work within transforming installations; these interactive environments become platforms for re-conceptualizing the theory and practice of art-making as an ongoing process of exchange in community.
